A Dhaka court on Monday sent Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam to jail in a case filed over the alleged abetment of the death of his second wife, Mariam Khatun.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam passed the order after hearing.

At the hearing, investigation officer Police Inspector Mohammad Salahuddin of the Detective Branch’s Tejgaon zonal team sought an order to send Nazrul to jail after completion of his eight-day remand.

The defence lawyer, Mahbubul Islam, sought bail for the lawmaker. After hearing both sides, the court ordered him to be sent to jail.

Earlier on 20 September evening, police recovered the hanging body of Mariyam, 19, the second wife of MP GM Nazrul Islam, from flat 203 of the NAM Bhaban under Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.

At the time, the door of the room was locked from inside. Later, with assistance from the Criminal Investigation Department, police broke open the door and recovered the body hanging from a ceiling fan.

Police also found some handwritten notes in the room.

The following day, Mariyam’s father SM Masum Billah filed a case against Nazrul Islam, his first wife Maksuda Islam and Mariyam’s maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman.

Police arrested Nazrul Islam and his first wife Maksuda the same night.
