A Dhaka court on Thursday granted a four-day remand for Jamaat-e-Islami Member of Parliament Gazi Nazrul Islam for interrogation in a case filed over the abetment of suicide of his second wife, Mariam.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ripon Hossain granted the four-day remand following a hearing on a seven-day remand application.
The investigation officer of the case, Inspector Mohammad Salauddin of the Detective Branch (DB) of police, produced the Satkhira-4 lawmaker before the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court after the completion of his initial four-day remand and sought a fresh seven-day remand for questioning.
Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam of the Prosecution Department confirmed the court order.
Earlier, court lock-up In-charge SI Morshed Alam said that Gazi Nazrul was kept in the court lock-up and would be brought to the courtroom during the hearing.
According to the case statement, police recovered the hanging body of Mariam, 19, the second wife of Gazi Nazrul, from Flat No 203 of NAM Building No 5, situated opposite the Parliament Building, on Sunday. On the night of the recovery, police took Gazi Nazrul and his first wife Maksuda Islam into custody.
Subsequently, Mariam’s father, SM Masum Billah, filed a case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, accusing MP Gazi Nazrul, his first wife Maksuda Islam, and the deceased’s maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman of abetment of Mariam’s suicide.
The following day, a Dhaka court granted a four-day remand for Gazi Nazrul and a one-day remand for Maksuda Begum following an application by Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station SI Md Shamsujjoha Sarkar.
That same night, the investigation of the case was handed over to the DB police, who are currently investigating the matter based on the allegations made by Mariam’s family.
In the First Information Report (FIR), Mariam’s father alleged that Mariam was married to MP Gazi Nazrul Islam in June through the direct abetment of her maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman.
Following the marriage, Mariam lived in the NAM Building flat with Gazi Nazrul and his first wife Maksuda. The FIR further alleged that Gazi Nazrul and Maksuda subjected Mariam to physical and mental torture over various issues since the marriage, which Mariam had previously reported to her family members.
