There are no alarming signs of a resurgence in extremism in Bangladesh at present, although law enforcement agencies remain on round-the-clock alert, Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit chief Mohammad Shamsul Haque said on Monday.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Media Centre, Shamsul, also an additional commissioner of the DMP, said suspected extremist activities were being monitored through online platforms, social media, intelligence inputs and police databases.
“Whenever we receive any information, we immediately conduct operations. We are keeping these issues under control and making our highest efforts,” he said.
Asked whether recent incidents, including explosions in Keraniganj and the recovery of a bomb-like object in Motijheel, indicated the presence of extremist groups, the CTTC chief said there was no basis for reaching such a conclusion at this stage.
“We do not have any scope to say that at this moment. However, we can say that we are not seeing any alarming signs of that nature in the country,” he said.
Referring to the object recovered in Motijheel, Shamsul said police acted immediately and deployed the bomb disposal unit to the scene.
He said the DMP’s Motijheel Division was investigating the incident and that it would be inappropriate to comment on those involved or their possible motives before the inquiry was completed.
