Twenty-five years after entering Bollywood, Dia Mirza has reached a point where the meaning behind a story matters more to her than its scale or screen time.

The actor, who has worked across mainstream cinema, production and socially conscious projects, now asks what a story hopes to achieve before signing a film. “Why is this story being told, and what impact is it going to have?” she said.

Her recent show ‘Operation Safed Sagar’ strengthened that approach. Dia praised the military drama for its detailed research and measured storytelling, saying she values “depth” over the length of a role.

Her sense of purpose also shapes her environmental and social advocacy. As a UN SDG Advocate and UNEP Goodwill Ambassador, she campaigns on climate change, biodiversity, pollution, women’s participation and children’s rights. She believes speaking out must lead to action.

That philosophy extends to fashion. Dia says she prefers handwoven textiles and traditional craftsmanship over fleeting trends, inspired by the stories behind her mother’s wardrobe.

Among her most treasured possessions is her great-grandmother’s sari, which she believes is at least 300 years old — a reminder of the history she continues to carry while looking towards the future.
