A canteen worker died on Thursday evening after suffering severe burns in a gas leakage explosion at the JERA Meghnaghat Power Plant in Sonargaon of Narayanganj.
The deceased was identified as Shankar, 25.
He died around 6pm while undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka, said the institute’s Emergency Department Resident Surgeon Shaon Bin Rahman.
Shankar suffered burns on 46 percent of his body, including injuries to his respiratory tract, the doctor added.
The explosion took place on Wednesday afternoon while officials and employees of the power plant were having buffet lunch at the canteen. Witnesses said a sudden blast inside the canteen left at least 12 people with burn injuries on their hands, faces and legs.
The injured were rescued and taken to the burn institute in Dhaka.
JERA Meghnaghat Power Plant Safety Officer Fakhrul Islam said the injured included canteen workers Shankar, Amir, Kawsar and Al-Amin, while the others were plant officials. He suspected the explosion may have occurred after someone tried to light a fire while a gas stove remained on following lunch preparations.
The injured were identified as Nazmul Sheikh, 40, Saiful Islam, 30, Ramizul, 45, Amir, 25, Kawsar, 30, Tuhin Sheikh, 30, Monir Hossain, 45, Al-Amin, 40, Osman Gani, 30, Suprabhat Ghosh, 42, and Badrul Haidar, 50.
Shaon Bin Rahman said six injured people were discharged on Wednesday, while five others are still undergoing treatment at the hospital.
