The government has appointed new Vice-Chancellors (VCs) to 11 public universities across the country, including the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).
Initially, the government announced appointments for 11 universities, but the nomination of the Vice-Chancellor for Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur was canceled shortly afterward.
The Secondary and Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education issued several notifications regarding these appointments on Thursday.
Professor Ekramul Haque has been appointed as the 16th vice-chancellor of BUET, succeeding the current vice-chancellor Professor Abu Borhan Mohammad Badruzzaman.
In other appointments, Professor Mohammad Iqbal from the Department of Industrial and Production Engineering at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) has been named the Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology (DUET), Gazipur.
Professor Mohammad Amir Hossain Bhuiyan of the Environmental Science Department at Jahangirnagar University (JU) will take over as Vice-Chancellor of Jamalpur University of Science and Technology.
Prof ABM Shahidul Islam from the Marketing Department of Dhaka University (DU) has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University (MBSTU).
Prof Golam Rabbani of the Institute of Social Welfare and Research (ISWR) at Dhaka University has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Noakhali Science and Technology University (NSTU).
For Pabna University of Science and Technology (PUST), the government has appointed Prof Abul Hasnat Md
Shamim from the School of Agriculture and Rural Development (SARD) at the Bangladesh Open University (BoU).
Prof Zainul Abedin Siddique from the Chemistry Department of Chittagong University (CU) has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Rangamati Science and Technology University (RMSTU).
The Barishal University will be led by Prof Md Mamun-or-Rashid, currently the Dean of the Faculty of Oceanography at Patuakhali Science and Technology University (PSTU).
Prof MM Shariful Karim of the English Department has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Comilla University, while Prof AKM Matinur Rahman from the Public Administration Department has been appointed to the same post at Islamic University.
Mohammad Mosharaf Hossain, the pro-vice-chancellor of Jamalpur University of Science and Technology, has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University (JKKNIU).
Earlier, Professor Anisur Rahman from the Department of Marketing, Dhaka University, had been appointed as vice-chancellor of Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur, but his appointment was canceled shortly afterward through a separate government notification.
It was noted that Prof Anisur Rahman is the brother-in-law of Nuruzzaman Ahmed, the former social welfare minister of the previous Awami League government.
