The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has pushed back the deadline for filing online VAT returns through its e-VAT platform to 22 February, citing public interest and recent technical disruptions.
An official order noted that the extension was necessary due to an extended period of government holidays around Shab-e-Barat and the national election, which disrupted business activities and compliance efforts.
Further complications arose on 15 February when the OTP server of the e-Challan system went offline, preventing many taxpayers from completing their submissions before the original cutoff.
Invoking its authority under Section 64 (1A) of the Value Added Tax and Supplementary Duty Act, 2012, the revenue board granted additional time to ensure businesses are not penalised for delays beyond their control.
The NBR said the move is intended to safeguard VAT-registered entities from compliance risks and urged taxpayers to take advantage of the extended period to file their January 2026 returns within the new timeframe.
Officials also assured that measures are being taken to stabilise the system and avoid similar technical setbacks in the future.
The e-VAT system, introduced as part of Bangladesh’s tax modernisation drive, remains a cornerstone of efforts to enhance transparency and efficiency in revenue collection.
