A mobile court has ordered fines of Tk1 lakh and imprisonment for the accused on charges of producing soybean oil without approval and preparing food in an unhygienic environment in separate operations in Narail Sadar on Monday.
Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate Md Sohanur Rahman Setu and ABM Manowarul Alam issued these orders in separate rulings.
The convicted individuals are Kazi Jihad Ullah (48), the producer of ‘Jara’ brand soybean oil at A.J. Consumer Products business establishment at Auria Mor in Narail Sadar, and cook Abdur Rahman (27) of Haji Biriyani House in the city.
According to district administration sources, the district administration and the Department of Consumer Rights Protection conducted another operation in the Auria area of Sadar on Monday afternoon. At the A.J. Consumer Products establishment, low-quality open oil from barrels in the market is refined through a machine, then bottled and packaged.
In this manner, the proprietor, Kazi Jihad Ullah, supplies thousands of bottles to the market daily under the name ‘Jara’ brand soybean oil.
The mobile court found evidence of producing oil without Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) approval, packaging with misleading information, and marketing it at prices higher than the fixed rate for various offenses.
The mobile court judge Md Sohanur Rahman Setu fined the establishment one lakh taka under the Consumer Protection Act.
Additionally, the establishment was ordered to stop producing and marketing oil without proper documentation.
During this operation Shamim Hasan, Assistant Director of the District Consumer Rights Protection Department, along with Ansar members were present.
District administration officials stated that such operations will continue in the public interest.
