Four people were injured in a clash between two groups of the district BNP following the party’s 47th founding anniversary celebrations. The incident took place around 8 pm on Monday at Amjhupi Bazar in Sadar Upazila.
Those injured include Mostak Raja (35), Kabir (30), Ariful Islam (55), and Lijon (45). They are currently receiving treatment at Meherpur General Hospital.
According to local sources, the clash broke out suddenly between the two groups on their way back from the anniversary event. The confrontation involved chasing and stone-throwing, creating a tense atmosphere and panic throughout the market area. Police and military forces later intervened to restore order.
Despite this, the area remains tense, and many locals are avoiding the market in fear.
Organising Secretary of Meherpur BNP Omar Faruk Liton alleged that followers of former Sadar Upazila BNP Secretary Saiful Islam attacked while escorting their leaders and activists after the program.
District BNP General Secretary Advocate Kamrul Islam condemned the incident as an act of ‘terrorism’ and demanded swift action against those responsible.
Meherpur Sadar Police Officer-in-Charge Mezbaha Uddin said the situation is now under control, with increased patrols by law enforcement agencies.
