Inter came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Roma in the standout clash of the early 2026-27 Serie A season on Saturday night, with Lautaro Martinez scoring twice to keep both sides level at the top of the table.
Roma made the stronger start and punished Inter’s mistakes. Manu Kone opened the scoring in the sixth minute after finding himself free in the six-yard box, with Inter struggling to play out against Roma’s pressure.
Inter failed to respond and Roma struck again in the 36th minute. Kone initially saw his second goal ruled out, but VAR overturned the decision after another defensive error from Inter, giving the midfielder his brace.
Inter changed after the break and quickly found a way back. Marcus Thuram became more influential through the middle and linked with Lautaro, who reduced the deficit in the 47th minute with a left-footed shot that wrong-footed Mile Svilar.
The momentum shifted towards Inter as fatigue reduced Roma’s intensity. Inter pushed deeper into Roma territory, while Svilar repeatedly kept his side ahead. His outstanding save from Thuram prevented the equaliser before Lautaro struck the bar.
The Inter captain finally completed his brace in the 80th minute, finishing the comeback and bringing his side level.
Roma then had to withstand further pressure. Several players struggled physically late on, with Mario Hermoso and Leonardo Balerdi asking to come off injured. Donyell Malen also requested a substitution but could not leave the pitch.
Thuram came close to completing the turnaround late on, but his chance went wide and Roma held on for a point.
The draw leaves Roma and Inter level at the top of Serie A, while Lazio could yet join them. Both sides showed enough attacking quality to recover from difficult positions, but their defensive problems also remained clear.
