Kylian Mbappe became the highest scorer in World Cup history after scoring twice against England in the third place match.
France lost the game 6-4, but Mbappe reached a major personal mark. His two goals took his total to 22 in World Cup history.
The 27-year-old moved past Lionel Messi, who has scored 21 goals in the tournament.
Messi still has a chance to add to his total when Argentina face Spain in the World Cup final. However, the match could be the final World Cup appearance of his career.
Mbappe is likely to play in at least one more World Cup.
The France captain also ended the 2026 tournament with 10 goals. He now leads the Golden Boot race by two goals ahead of Messi.
Mbappe reached 22 goals in 22 World Cup matches.
He scored four goals in the 2018 World Cup as France won the title. He then scored eight goals in 2022, when France reached the final but lost to Argentina.
The Real Madrid forward added 10 more goals in the 2026 edition.
“Messi is going to score (in final), that’s for sure. I’m just trying to help my team win. When you score a lot of goals at the World Cup, it puts you in a certain category,” Mbappe said.
Despite the record, Mbappe said the defeat remained more important to him.
“I would have preferred not to be the all-time top scorer and to be playing tomorrow’s match. It’s good in terms of legacy, but today it’s not the first thing on my mind.”
Mbappe left the tournament with another place in football history. But his record came on a difficult night for France as England claimed third place after a thrilling 10 goal match.
