Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes has broken his silence following his side’s 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, thanking supporters and teammates while avoiding the controversy surrounding the match.
Paredes became one of the central figures in the heated scenes after the final whistle. He was involved in confrontations with Spain midfielder Gavi as tempers flared following Argentina’s defeat.
Early reports claimed Paredes had been sent off after the match. However, FIFA later confirmed he was not shown a red card, correcting an earlier administrative record. The governing body has nevertheless opened an investigation into the post-match incidents.
Despite the scrutiny, Paredes chose to focus on Argentina’s campaign rather than the controversy.

He ended his message by writing:

FIFA has yet to announce whether any players or staff will face disciplinary action after completing its investigation into the incidents following the World Cup final.
