Argentina defender Nicolas Otamendi has announced his retirement from international football, ending a 17-year international career that brought a World Cup title, two Copa América crowns and 139 appearances. The 38-year-old confirmed his decision on Thursday after Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
The experienced centre-back leaves as one of Argentina’s most decorated defenders. He represented his country at four World Cups and helped Lionel Scaloni’s side enjoy its most successful era in decades.
Otamendi’s final appearance came in Argentina’s 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in New Jersey. Ferran Torres scored the winner as Spain denied the Albiceleste a second consecutive World Cup crown.
Soon after the final, Otamendi shared an emotional farewell message on Instagram.
“Today I have to write the most difficult words of my career.”
He also reflected on ending his international journey in football’s biggest match.
“As fate would have it, my last match was a World Cup final. It wasn’t the result we wanted, but I’m leaving with my head held high, knowing that this team gave it their all right up to the very last second.”
The veteran then thanked Argentina for helping him achieve his greatest football dream.
“Thank you, Argentina, for allowing me to fulfil the dream of becoming a world champion.”
Otamendi made his Argentina debut in 2009. He soon became a regular in the national team and later emerged as one of its defensive leaders.
Most importantly, he played a key role in Argentina’s golden generation under Scaloni. During that period, the team won the 2022 FIFA World Cup and lifted two Copa América titles.
His consistency and leadership also helped Argentina reach another World Cup final in 2026.
Although his international career has ended, Otamendi will continue playing club football.
The defender recently joined River Plate after spending 16 successful years in Europe. During that spell, he represented Porto, Valencia, Manchester City and Benfica.
