Spain midfielder Gavi believes Argentina’s players should not face suspensions despite the chaotic scenes that followed Sunday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
Spain beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time to claim their second World Cup title. The match ended on a heated note, with Argentina reduced to 10 men after Enzo Fernández received a red card and tempers flaring after the final whistle.
Gavi became involved in a confrontation with Leandro Paredes, while Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala was seen clashing with Spain midfielder Dani Olmo.
FIFA has since opened an investigation into the post-match incidents, with reports suggesting several Argentina players could face disciplinary action.
However, Gavi does not believe further punishment is necessary.
“No, no. To tell you the truth, I don’t think they should be suspended,” Gavi told COPE.
“I understand it’s not a good image for the kids, for the children, but I think there’s also that side of football that’s a bit more aggressive.”
The Barcelona midfielder added that any punishment should have been dealt with during the match itself.
“Perhaps the most logical thing for me would be to send him off during the match and that’s it. But, as I said, in the end I think it’s all football and it always has to be that way.”
FIFA has not yet announced whether any additional sanctions will follow as its investigation into the incidents continues.
