Winning the FIFA World Cup is the biggest prize in football. However, strong individual displays are always recognised once the tournament ends. Spain lifted the trophy in 2026, but the fan voted Team of the Tournament featured stars from several nations.
The final XI was decided by supporters around the world. It was not selected by FIFA’s technical study group. That point became important after the announcement, as two of Spain’s most decorated players failed to make the side.
Golden Glove winner Unai Simon was left out despite helping Spain concede only once during the tournament. Young Player Award recipient Pau Cubarsi also missed selection after impressing throughout the competition.
Instead, Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha claimed the spot between the posts. He received almost 40 per cent of the public vote. Simon had topped the goalkeeper voting after the semi finals, but Vozinha’s consistent support across earlier rounds proved enough to earn him a place.
Spain still had strong representation in defence. Marc Cucurella and Pedro Porro were chosen as the two full backs after impressive campaigns. Dayot Upamecano of France partnered Argentina defender Lisandro Martinez in central defence.
The midfield combined experience with attacking quality. Golden Ball winner Rodri was selected alongside England’s Jude Bellingham and France playmaker Michael Olise. Bellingham attracted almost 29 per cent of the vote after winning the Bronze Boot. Rodri finished well behind despite receiving the tournament’s top individual honour.
The forward line contained three of football’s biggest names. Erling Haaland led the attack with Lionel Messi on one flank and Golden Boot winner Kylian Mbappe on the other. Mbappe collected almost 30 per cent of the vote to finish as the most popular forward. Haaland followed with 27 per cent, while Messi earned 22 per cent.
FIFA opened voting for 48 hours after the World Cup final. The shortlist was created using the leading vote winner from every knockout stage, along with additional players chosen for their performances during the tournament.
While Spain celebrated lifting the trophy, the fan selected XI showed that supporters did not always agree with the official individual awards. Simon and Cubarsi were the biggest names to miss out, ensuring the final team became one of the tournament’s most talked about talking points.
