A Dhaka court on Wednesday showed former Nilphamari lawmaker Saddam Hossain Pavel arrested in an attempted murder case filed with New Market Police Station after he secured bail in another case.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Monirul Islam passed the order following a hearing on a petition filed by the investigation officer.
Police produced Pavel before the court, where state prosecutor Harun ur Rashid sought an order to show him arrested in the case.
Defence counsel, led by advocate Golam Rabbani, opposed the plea. After hearing both sides, the court allowed the petition and ordered that Pavel be sent to jail.
Pavel was arrested from the Lalmatia area of Mohammadpur on 4 September, 2025.
The following day, he was produced before a Dhaka court in connection with an attempted murder case over the assault on Dhaka College student Majedul Islam, which was also filed with New Market Police Station.
The court granted police a two-day remand on 15 September.
After the remand ended, he was sent to jail on 11 October.
On 18 May this year, the High Court granted him bail in that case.
While he was in jail, New Market Police Station Sub-Inspector Omar Faruk, the investigation officer of another attempted murder case, filed a petition on 15 July seeking to show Pavel arrested in that case.
The court fixed 22 July for the hearing before passing Wednesday’s order.
According to the case statement, 20-year-old Muhammad Shamim was injured during an attack on an anti-discrimination student movement procession in the New Market area on 16 July, 2024.
The complaint alleges that leaders and activists of the Awami League and its associate bodies attacked demonstrators with lethal weapons, leaving Shamim seriously injured.
The victim later filed the case with New Market Police Station, naming 116 accused, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
