At just 18, Dibyamoy Chakraborty Riju has taken a major step towards a professional music career by joining popular group Oni Hassan – The Band as its drummer.
Riju will make his first performance with the band as a professional member at the ‘Mixtape Volume 4’ concert, scheduled for Friday evening, 6 November, at Radisson Blu Hotel in Chattogram. He is being recognised as the country’s youngest professional musician.
The young drummer secured his place through an online competition organised by the band. Around 200 drummers from across the country took part, and the organisers ultimately selected Riju to join the group. He will now work with the band professionally.
His father, Dr Ashish Kumar Chakraborty, managing director of Universal Medical College Hospital in Dhaka, confirmed the news. He said Riju first developed an interest in playing drums at the age of nine and gradually built his skills.
“I am extremely happy and proud as a father. Riju has joined Oni Hassan – The Band through his own talent. I am also a great fan of band music. I ask everyone to pray for him so that he can fulfil his dreams,” Ashish said.
Riju previously performed with the band at his first stage appearance, an open-air concert at Jamuna Future Park in Dhaka. That performance also brought him recognition as one of the country’s youngest drummers.
He is currently studying at A-level at Green Herald International School in Dhaka. He began learning drums under Fazlul Haque Montu, drummer of the band Dhaka.
His selection marks a new chapter in the young musician’s journey, as he prepares to perform regularly alongside established artistes.
