A staff officer to the Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) Commissioner has been reassigned to headquarters following a controversial post published on the force’s official Facebook page detailing an opposition long march.
Inspector Khondkar Jalal Uddin Mahmud was withdrawn from his post and issued with a show-cause notice over the incident.
The post concerned a roadside rally held at Bhogra Bypass intersection on Saturday, addressed by opposition leader Dr Shafiqur Rahman and 11-party alliance leaders. Heavy police contingents were deployed to oversee security.
Following the event, a statement on the GMP’s official page noted that 8,000 to 10,000 attendees had passed through the area peacefully, highlighting the active oversight of Acting GMP Commissioner Mohammad Taherul Haque Chowhan and senior officers.
The social media update triggered swift online backlash from BNP and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leaders, who criticised the police’s public commentary and demanded accountability. The post was subsequently edited, deleted, and Inspector Mahmud was removed from his position.
GMP Deputy Commissioner Md Zahid Hossain Bhuiyan confirmed the officer’s attachment to headquarters, verifying that the disciplinary action was taken directly in connection with the Facebook post.
