A train journey, a chance meeting and a sudden rainstorm bring two strangers into an unexpected love story. For a generation that grew up with 1990s Bangla cinema, Hothat Brishti was more than a romance.
It was the story of Anu and Brishti, whose lives become intertwined across borders, carried by its music, stars and quiet emotional pull.
Directed by Basu Chatterjee, the 1998 Bangladesh-India joint production became a defining film for Ferdous and introduced Priyanka Trivedi to audiences. Its six songs, composed by Nachiketa Chakraborty, became part of its enduring appeal.
Now, 28 years later, the story returns with Abar Hothat Brishti. But it is not a sequel. It is a remake.
Directed by Kamruzzaman, the film retains the original’s central story and emotional atmosphere while updating its presentation. Arian Sarowar takes Ferdous’s role, while Radifa Narmin plays Priyanka’s character. The film releases nationwide on 2 October.
That makes the challenge bigger than simply retelling a familiar story. Arian said he watched the original several times and studied Ferdous’s performance without imitating him. Three of Nachiketa’s six original songs have been recreated, while two new songs have been added.
Interestingly, Hothat Brishti itself was a remake of the 1996 Tamil film Kadhal Kottai, yet Chatterjee’s version developed its own identity and became a major success in Bangladesh and India.
Now, older viewers will bring memories of Ferdous, Priyanka and the 90s, while younger audiences will meet the story through Arian and Radifa. Kamruzzaman has called the remake a major challenge and said it has been adapted for contemporary audiences.
Produced by Ashirbad Chalachitra and Impress Telefilm, the film completed shooting around three months ago and received Certification Board clearance. Its premiere is set for 4pm on 30 September at a cineplex in the airport area, with the cast, crew and director expected to attend.
The cast also includes Azad Abul Kalam, Farzana Chhobi, Cristano Tanmoy, Kayes Arju, Mou Khan and Jhuna Chowdhury.
The question is whether this new version can make audiences feel the romance again — without asking them to forget the rain of 1998.
