A retired police member in Lakshmipur attacked his son and two others with a sharp weapon, leaving three people injured, before jumping from a rooftop and later dying while undergoing treatment at hospital.

The incident took place on Monday morning in a rented house in the Banchanagar area of the town.

The deceased was identified as Nasir Ahmed, 55 of Ekhlaspur village in Faridganj upazila of Chandpur district.

He previously worked in the traffic division of Chandragonj Police Station in Lakshmipur. He had been living in a rented house in Banchanagar and retired from service about a year ago.

The injured are his son Imran, 21, Golam Rahman’s son Mizanur Rahman, and Abdul Mannan’s son Nasir Ahmed.

Locals said Imran first came out of the house in the morning with serious injuries to his neck. Hearing his screams, nearby residents rushed to the spot. At that time, Nasir Ahmed attacked them with a sharp weapon, injuring two more people.

At one stage, Nasir Ahmed went up to the rooftop of the three-storey building and jumped. Police later rescued him and admitted him to Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Two of the injured were later sent to Dhaka for advanced treatment as their condition deteriorated.

Additional Superintendent of Police of Lakshmipur, Hossain Mohammad Raihan Kazemi, said “Police rushed to the scene after receiving the news and rescued the injured, sending them to hospital.”

He confirmed the retired police member had left service about a year ago.

He added “Preliminary information suggests he may have been mentally unstable, and the matter is under investigation.”
