A madrasa teacher named Mufti Ibrahim Bin Mujib was detained by local residents and handed over to the police after allegedly severely beating a 12-year-old student, Abdullah, for failing to attend madrasa regularly in Nabinagar upazila of Brahmanbaria.
The incident occurred on Wednesday morning at Krishnanagar Ashraful Ulum Hafizia Madrasa in Nabinagar upazila. The victim, Abdullah, 12, is the son of the late Ruman Miah from Sadekpur Union under Brahmanbaria Sadar upazila. The accused teacher, Mufti Ibrahim, is also Abdullah’s maternal uncle-in-law (khalu).
Upon receiving information, police took the teacher into custody at the police station and sent the injured student to a local hospital for medical treatment. Photos and video footage of the incident spread on social media platform Facebook, sparking widespread local outrage and strong condemnation from civil society.
According to police and family sources, Abdullah’s family admitted him to Krishnanagar Ashraful Ulum Hafizia Madrasa about two years ago. Since then, he frequently returned home without informing anyone.
Last Thursday, he again went home without permission. Subsequently, his mother, Afroza Begum, called the teacher, Mufti Ibrahim, to their home and requested him to take Abdullah back.
On Wednesday morning, the teacher took him to the madrasa and severely beat him, causing injuries. Local residents noticed the incident, rescued the boy, detained the teacher, and handed him over to the police.
Nabinagar Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Rajib Kanti Nath said that police arrived at the scene upon receiving news and took the teacher into custody from an excited crowd. He added that necessary legal action would be taken subject to a written complaint regarding the physical abuse of the student.
