A Dhaka court on Monday ordered the freezing of seven bank accounts belonging to Independent Television Chief Executive and Editor M Shamsur Rahman and his associates.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Shahjahan Kabir issued the order following an application filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The application stated that allegations had been made against Beximco Group Chairman and former private industry and investment adviser to the ousted prime minister Salman F Rahman and others over the siphoning off of thousands of crores of taka from shareholders through the manipulation of placement shares and fraudulent activities.
They were also accused of misappropriating about Tk36,000 crore in loans obtained from various public and private banks through undue influence and laundering thousands of crores of taka abroad.
Subsequently, allegations also emerged against Independent Television Chief Executive and Editor M Shamsur Rahman over acquiring assets beyond his known sources of income and money laundering.
During the investigation, information about bank accounts belonging to Shamsur Rahman, who was implicated in the allegations, was uncovered.
Reliable sources indicated that attempts were being made to transfer, relocate or convert funds held in these accounts.
The ACC application therefore sought to freeze the bank accounts belonging to Shamsur Rahman and his associates to ensure a proper investigation and the administration of justice.
