Actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut has voiced her support for Trisha Krishnan amid the controversy surrounding the actress and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay, writes Times of India.
Speaking to reporters in Kullu after chairing a District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee meeting, Kangana criticised the practice of targeting women through personal attacks and character assassination.
Without directly naming Trisha, she referred to the controversy in Tamil Nadu and said women were often singled out when allegations involved personal relationships.
“You have seen what happened in Tamil Nadu, where a very respected artist and actress was involved in a matter where the relationship was between both parties. However, when it comes to abuses and character assassination, it is always the woman who is targeted,” Kangana said.
She added that attacks on women’s character were not limited to India but were seen around the world.
“Whether she is a working woman, a successful woman, a leader or someone in a position of power, her character is always discussed to demean her and bring her down,” she said.
The controversy involving Trisha intensified after she attended Tamil Nadu’s Independence Day celebrations at Fort St George in Chennai on August 15. The actress was seated beside Vijay’s parents, SA Chandrasekhar and Shobha Chandrasekhar, during the event.
Photos from the programme circulated widely on social media, prompting speculation about Trisha’s alleged relationship with Vijay. The issue later escalated following remarks attributed to DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin.
Vijay subsequently criticised objectionable and double-meaning remarks directed at women, warning that such comments could invite legal action.
Kangana said society needed to examine its attitude towards women and stop using their personal lives to undermine them.
The controversy has also drawn attention to the broader issue of public figures being subjected to character attacks over alleged relationships, with women often facing the brunt of the criticism.
