More than a week after the release of this year’s Eid films, uncertainty continues to cloud box office performance in Dhallywood, with conflicting figures circulating widely across social media and film circles. Estimates for the same titles vary significantly, with some claims suggesting earnings of up to Tk4 crore, while others place them closer to Tk2 crore.
A number of these figures have been linked to data attributed to Star Cineplex. However, Mesbah Uddin Ahmed, Senior Manager of the chain’s Media and Marketing Department, clarified that no official revenue statements have been issued.
He explained that many of the circulating numbers are based on publicly accessible information such as show counts and online ticket availability, from which observers attempt to calculate occupancy and approximate earnings. While some of these estimates may appear plausible, they remain unofficial.
Industry insiders say that although a rough idea of performance may be possible for one or two films, most of the figures being shared are speculative. There are also concerns that inaccurate or exaggerated numbers are being deliberately circulated.
Producer Shahriar Shakil, whose film ‘Domm’ is among the Eid releases, acknowledged strong audience turnout but urged caution. He noted that without a formal box office tracking system, verifying earnings is difficult, and much of the data currently in circulation cannot be relied upon.
In contrast, ‘Bonolota Express’ director Tanim Noor has shared figures from his own production team. According to him, the film crossed Tk1 crore in ticket sales within its first four days and has reached Tk2.26 crore after eight days. He also pointed out that some widely shared figures refer to gross ticket sales rather than net earnings, leading to further confusion.
Of the five films released during Eid, the remaining titles including ‘Prince: Once Upon a Time in Dhaka’, ‘Rakkhosh’ and ‘Pressure Cooker’ have yet to disclose any official earnings data.
