Government Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni has announced that efforts are underway to allot residences to Members of Parliament by 10 April.
The announcement followed the second meeting of the Parliament held at the Cabinet Room of Secretariat on Monday.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, which commenced shortly before 1pm, the chief whip assured that MPs would be able to move into their allotted houses very soon.
Moni noted that the procurement of necessary items, including furniture, is currently ongoing. He also confirmed that initiatives have been taken to resolve existing issues regarding the supply of safe drinking water.
Addressing the infrastructure at the National Parliament, the chief whip revealed that the sound system remains non-functional.
He stated that the current system must be utilised until a new one is installed. Moni emphasised that the authorities would remain vigilant during the procurement process to prevent any financial irregularities, specifically referring to past “pillow” and “curtain” scandals.
The chief whip further alleged that the sound system had been targeted by sabotage on 5 August. He remarked that the technical failure was so severe during the first session that the prime minister was forced to speak using a hand-microphone – an unprecedented occurrence in the House.
“We suspect that someone committed sabotage,” Moni stated, adding that an investigation committee has been formed to investigate the matter. The committee is expected to submit its findings in a report on 2 April.
