BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday stated that the illness of party Chairperson and former rime minister Khaleda Zia began as a result of the repression and persecution by the previous fascist government.

He said, “Khaleda Zia dedicated her entire life to establishing democracy in this country. The injustice done to her by the previous government, including her six years in jail—two of those years in solitary confinement—led to her current condition. It is widely believed that her illness began during that time.”

Fakhrul made these remarks after Juma prayers in front of the BNP central office in Nayapaltan.

He mentioned that Begum Khaleda Zia has been in critical condition in the hospital for several weeks, under the care of highly qualified national and foreign doctors.

“However, as the treatment requires a more advanced hospital, a decision was made to take her to a hospital in England,” he added.

Regarding her transfer abroad, Fakhrul stated that doctors are doing everything possible and expressed hope that if the air ambulance arrives from Qatar tomorrow (Saturday), she could be taken to England the following day, 7 December.
