Students of Khulna University caught a canteen worker on Wednesday night for allegedly placing a mobile phone secretly in a washroom at Bijoy ’24 Hall. Residential students have expressed concern over security because of the incident.
Students said Imam Hasan has been employed at the hall canteen for around two years.
The matter came to light when students discovered a suspicious mobile phone in the washroom. Hasan was confined inside the hall afterwards, and the matter was reported to the university authorities.
Several students present at the scene claimed that multiple videos were found on the suspect’s mobile phone.
They later locked the administrative building of the university and shut all academic activities, demanding justice, UNB reports.
Allegations surfaced that the suspect had been secretly recording footage through the washroom’s ventilator gaps for an extended period and sharing the content via various Telegram groups.
However, the university administration and law enforcement agencies have yet to provide official confirmation regarding these claims.
A student, requesting anonymity, said that several residents expressed deep concern over such a security breach in a restricted female dormitory.
They have demanded an investigation to uncover the facts and called for the strictest possible legal and administrative measures if the allegations are proven true.
The students also urged the authorities to ensure effective monitoring of outsiders and service workers entering the female hall. Their demands include strengthening hall security, increasing CCTV surveillance, and taking necessary steps to prevent any recurrence of such incidents.
When asked, Prof. Selina Ahmed, provost of Bijoy ’24 Hall, said that an investigation is currently underway. “I do not wish to make any comments before the investigation is concluded. Necessary information will be provided after the inquiry,” the provost added.
