A high-level delegation from Germany’s Bundestag visited the Meghna Industrial Economic Zone (MIEZ) on Friday to explore opportunities for deeper trade, investment and industrial co-operation between Germany and Bangladesh.
The delegation toured key facilities at the economic zone, including two German-owned factories, CHT Bangladesh and Siegwerk Bangladesh, while examining the presence of German machinery and technology across the zone, Meghna Group of Industries (MGI) said in a press release on Saturday.
Meghna Group of Industries Chairman and Managing Director Mostafa Kamal welcomed the delegation, which was led by German Bundestag MP Nicklas Kappe.
Other members of the parliamentary delegation were MP and retired colonel Gerold Otten, MP Johann Saathoff and MP Ulle Schauws. They were joined by German Bundestag Administration Accompanying Officer Anja Katerina Elisabeth Bienert and interpreter Max Doerfler.
German Ambassador to Bangladesh Rüdiger Lotz accompanied the delegation along with senior German Embassy officials, including Economic Attaché Olga Nowikow Winnen, Head of Political, Press and Culture Monika Reuter, Political and Press Officer Miftahul Jannat and Economic Affairs Officer Mehrab Bin Tarek.
The release said most factories at MIEZ rely on German machinery and technology, reflecting industrial links between businesses in the two countries.
“It is encouraging to see the strong presence of German industry and technology at MIEZ,” Kappe said. “Visits like this reaffirm the depth of the economic partnership between Germany and Bangladesh, and we look forward to seeing this co-operation grow further in the years ahead.”
Mostafa Kamal said Germany had long been one of Bangladesh’s key economic and development partners, with the relationship built on decades of co-operation in infrastructure, health and energy as well as expanding trade, investment and human-resource development.
“I am honoured to welcome a high-level parliamentary delegation from the German Bundestag, the federal parliament of Germany, to MIEZ,” Kamal said.
He described MIEZ as Bangladesh’s most modern private economic zone, saying it offers uninterrupted power, gas and water supplies along with security, waste management and its own fire-fighting system.
“We invite our German investors to invest more here, and we assure them of full support and co-operation,” Kamal said.
MGI is also working on two other private economic zones available to investors — Comilla Economic Zone and Titas Economic Zone. The group said it has developed the zones as modern, investor-friendly industrial hubs equipped with facilities and security systems.
Along with local industries, companies from Germany, Australia, Switzerland, Norway, Japan, India, China, Belgium and the United States have established factories in the economic zones, according to the release.
MGI, founded in 1976, operates more than 57 industrial units across fast-moving consumer goods, energy, manufacturing and infrastructure, the release said. It employs more than 65,000 people and markets brands including Fresh, serving consumers in Bangladesh and overseas.
