A Dhaka court has placed Jarezul Islam and his girlfriend Shamima Akter on a five-day remand in the case related to the recovery of the dismembered body of Rangpur businessman Ashraful Haque, found from two blue drums near Dhaka’s National Eidgah grounds on Thursday evening.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Israt Jennifer Jerin issued the remand order on Saturday evening.
DB Police Inspector Md Akhter Morshed, the investigating officer, produced the two before the court in the evening seeking a seven-day remand for each.
No defence lawyer was present during the hearing.
Police arrested prime accused Jarezul from Daudkandi in Cumilla on Friday, while RAB detained Shamima over her alleged involvement.
According to the case statement, an extramarital relationship had developed between Ashraful and Shamima through prior acquaintance.
Later, Shamima became involved in another extramarital relationship with Ashraful’s friend Jarezul, creating tension among them.
Investigators said Shamima and Jarezul killed Ashraful inside a house in the Kadamtali area and left the body there. Two days later, on 13 November, they moved the body to the bathroom and cut it into 26 pieces. They then placed the parts in two drums, transported them by CNG and abandoned them near the water pump by the National Eidgah grounds in Shahbagh before fleeing.
On 14 November, Ashraful’s sister Anjira Begum filed a murder case with Shahbagh Police Station, naming Jarezul as the prime accused.
Police recovered the dismembered remains inside two blue drums near the National Eidgah gate on the evening of 13 November.
The identity was later confirmed through fingerprint analysis. Ashraful Haque, 42, was a resident of Nayapara village under Gopalpur Union in Badarganj upazila of Rangpur.
DB Police have said the murder appears to be linked to extramarital affairs based on initial findings.
