A day-long conference titled “Philosophy for Children” was held on Saturday at the RC Majumdar Arts Auditorium of University of Dhaka.
The event was jointly organised by the Department of Philosophy, Dev Centre for Philosophical Research, and the Centre for Moral Development, reads a press release.
Vice-Chancellor ABM Obaidul Islam attended the opening ceremony as the chief guest. The programme was chaired by Professor Md Nuruzzaman, chairman of the Department of Philosophy.
Md Abul Kalam Sarker, dean of the Faculty of Arts spoke as special guest. Md Yunus, director of the Centre for Moral Development, delivered the welcome address.
Ahmad Ullah moderated the programme. Teachers and students of the department were present.
Speaking at the event, the VC stressed the importance of philosophical practice in nurturing tolerance, generosity, and moral and human values among children. He said a humane society can be built through the practice of ethics and philosophy.
He also emphasised that developing well-educated children would help create competent leadership in the country.
He called for a shift away from the culture of viewing politeness as weakness, urging the promotion of respect and recognition for others.
The VC further urged all to play an active role in social change by setting aside personal interests and applying the moral teachings of philosophy.
Distinguished teachers and researchers presented papers on philosophy for children in three sessions of the conference. Renowned philosophers, essayists, and psychologists took part in discussions on the presented papers.
