Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) on Thursday organised a continuing medical education (CME) programme and haematology-oncology screening and consultation initiative on conditioning for allogeneic bone marrow transplantation, aiming to expand advanced treatment options for patients with complex blood disorders.
The programme was held at Shaheed Dr Milton Hall on the BMU campus in Shahbag, Dhaka, jointly organised by the university’s Department of Haematology, Medistan Health Care and several other institutions. Professor Dr F M Siddiqui, Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Medical University, attended the event as chief guest, while Professor Dr Md Mujibur Rahman Howlader, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and Development), was the special guest.
Dr Vivek Sharma, Head of Bone Marrow Transplantation at Asian Institute of Medical Sciences, presented the keynote paper on the procedure.
In a press release, BMU said the programme highlighted the importance of ensuring advanced treatment facilities for patients suffering from haematological disorders and complex blood-related diseases. The event also expressed optimism about a new chapter in bone marrow transplantation services at BMU, with emphasis on advancing the establishment of a dedicated bone marrow transplantation centre at the university.
The screening and consultation programme involved a joint effort by a five-member foreign specialist medical team and experts from BMU’s Department of Haematology. A total of 160 haematology patients underwent screening and their medical histories were recorded on Thursday.
Patients selected through the screening process who require bone marrow transplantation will receive the procedure at BMU, according to the release.
Medistan Health Care Director Dr Maskur Ahmed Usmani, Department of Haematology Chairman Professor Dr Md Rafiquzzaman Khan, Professor Dr Md Abdul Aziz, Professor Dr Amin Lutful Kabir and Professor Dr Md Adnan Hasan Masud, along with teachers, physicians and residents of the department, attended the programme.
