Police recovered the decomposed body of a female doctor from a flat in Aziz Super Market in the capital’s Shahbagh area on Friday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Fara Ferdous, 32.
Police said the body was recovered from flat 8/S on the 14th floor after officers broke open the door around noon.
It was later sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
Shahbagh Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Ekramul Haque said the body was found in a seated position on a bed with her head resting on a table, and it was in a decomposed state.
According to police, Fara Ferdous completed her MBBS from Sir Salimullah Medical College and had passed the 39th Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) examination.
She was currently pursuing an MS course at Bangladesh Medical University. She lived alone in the flat.
Her elder sister, also a doctor, lived in another flat in the same building. Police said the two last spoke on Tuesday, after which she could not be reached.
Neighbours informed the family after noticing a foul smell coming from the flat, following which police were informed.
Police said preliminary findings suggest she may have died due to a possible stroke or the consumption of sleeping pills amid stress and academic pressure.
However, officials said the exact cause of death will be confirmed after the post-mortem report.
The deceased hailed from Paigram village in Phultala upazila of Khulna district. She was unmarried, and her father is Abdur Rashid.
