Md Nazim Ud Doula, 25, a student of Government Titumir College, was sent to jail on Friday after being allegedly assaulted and handed over to the police while leaving the college premises following an examination.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order on Friday, sending him to prison as a suspected accused in a case with Banani Police Station filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act and Explosive Substances Act.
Advocate Farzana Yasmin Rakhi, representing the student, moved a bail petition in court, saying Nazim was leaving the college after an exam when a group of terrorists mobbed and assaulted him before handing him over to the police.
She further said her client is not involved in any political activities. However, the court rejected the bail application and ordered him to be sent to jail.
According to the case details, a procession against the interim government and cocktail explosions occurred on the evening of 20 September last year at the intersection of Road 11 and Road 6 in the capital’s Banani area. Banani police arrested Nazim yesterday from the Titumir College area as a suspected accused in that case.
Nazim, originally from Jaduchar village under Roumari Police Station in Kurigram district, currently resides in the Technopara area of Bashon, Gazipur.
Police records indicate that Nazim sustained injuries during a scuffle while being detained at the Titumir College premises yesterday.
He was subsequently taken into police custody and sent to Kurmitola General Hospital for primary treatment before being brought to the police station.
This afternoon, the case’s investigating officer, SI Md Kamal Hossain of Banani Police Station, produced the accused before the court with a detention prayer, leading the magistrate to order his imprisonment.
