An unidentified youth was killed after being stabbed during a Tazia procession brought out on the occasion of Holy Ashura in the Banglabazar area of Old Dhaka on Friday.

The incident occurred at approximately 5:30pm on 26 June.

Sutrapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Matiur Rahman confirmed the incident to TIMES of Bangladesh.

According to the OC, the youth was critically injured by a sharp weapon while the Tazia procession was passing through the Banglabazar area.

Pedestrians rescued the victim and rushed him to Mitford Hospital, where the attending doctor declared him dead.

Police have not yet been able to identify the deceased or those responsible for the attack. “We are yet to identify the youth. It cannot be said at this moment who killed him,” the OC said.

The OC further mentioned that the body would undergo a post-mortem examination as part of the legal process. Authorities are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding area to assist with the investigation.
