Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis Ameer Mamunul Haque has warned of a nationwide movement if the newly introduced property transfer law is not repealed.
He said the people would not accept any law that conflicts with the Quran and Sunnah.
Mamunul made the remarks while addressing a citizens’ rally organised by the Barishal district and metropolitan units of Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis at Barishal Town Hall around 2pm on Saturday.
The rally was chaired by Mufti Mizanur Rahman Khan, convener of the organisation’s Barishal metropolitan unit. Its central and local leaders also spoke at the event.
Referring to the legislation, Mamunul claimed that the BNP had repeatedly pledged that it would not enact any law contrary to the Quran and Sunnah if it came to power.
“Yet on 6 September, the current government’s law minister introduced a new law in parliament titled Property Transfer-2026,” he said.
He claimed that the country’s Islamic scholars had rejected several provisions of the law, saying they were inconsistent with the Quran and Sunnah.
“We want to make it clear that any law contrary to the Quran and Sunnah must be repealed,” Mamunul said.
He said the Quran and Sunnah are matters of the highest respect for Muslims in Bangladesh.
“If you do not withdraw from your attempt to undermine the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah and drive Islam out of Bangladesh, a fire will be ignited that will leave you devastated,” he said.
Mamunul said the movement to protect the Quran and Sunnah would not be confined to any single political party or platform.
“It will be a movement of all parties and people beyond party lines. It will be a movement of Muslims and patriots against those who seek to enact laws contrary to the Quran and Sunnah,” he said.
Mamunul also called for the implementation of the July Charter, saying the July uprising was not fought merely to amend existing laws.
“The July uprising took place to rebuild the state of Bangladesh and repair the country’s state and political system through reforms,” he said.
He called for constitutional reforms to include “Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim”, unwavering faith and trust in Allah, provisions for a caretaker government and the July Charter.
“Proper implementation of the July Charter will ensure that no fascist force can return to power in Bangladesh,” he said.
Calling for a balance of power and neutrality in state institutions, Mamunul proposed transferring some powers from the prime minister to the president.
He also called for an independent judiciary and an independent Public Service Commission.
“We do not want a new Nationalist Police Party. The people of Bangladesh want the police, administration and every institution of the state to remain neutral and serve the state and the people,” he said.
Mamunul also urged political parties not to disregard the outcome of a referendum.
“It cannot happen that the BNP forms a government after receiving 50 per cent of the vote and then ignores the voting rights of 70 per cent of the people,” he said.
“If you ignore the voting rights of 70 per cent of the people, the votes of 50 per cent will never be able to protect your power,” he added.
Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis Secretary General Maulana Jalaluddin Ahmad, Joint Secretary General Maulana Ataullah Amin, Organising Secretary Mufti Wazayer Amin, Dhaka South Metropolitan General Secretary and Barishal divisional supervisor Maulana Rakibul Islam, among others, attended the rally.
Leaders of the Barishal district and metropolitan units, senior Islamic scholars and activists were also present.
