The 11-party alliance has announced a long march from Dhaka to Rangpur via Gazipur on 19 September, demanding implementation of the referendum verdict, justice for the July killings and action on rising prices, corruption and other issues.
The programme will begin at 7:30am from Manik Mia Avenue in Dhaka on Saturday, alliance leaders said at a press conference on Thursday.
The first roadside rally is scheduled to be held at Bhogra Bypass in Gazipur, they said.
The alliance said the long march is part of its ongoing movement to implement what it describes as the aspirations of the 2024 mass movement, the July National Charter and the referendum verdict.
The announcement came at a press conference held at 3pm on Thursday.
According to the alliance, 33 political parties spent about a year holding discussions and consultations before preparing the “July National Charter 2025” with the aim of establishing a humane, just and accountable Bangladesh for ordinary and working people.
The alliance claimed that the charter subsequently received public support through a referendum.
However, it alleged that little effective progress has been made in implementing the referendum verdict, reform proposals and related commitments.
It also cited rising prices of essential commodities, corruption, extortion, land grabbing and partisan politics as major factors behind the country’s growing challenges.
The alliance said it has been holding a series of street programmes to press its demands. As part of the campaign, it organised a Dhaka-Chattogram road march on 5 September.
Preparations for the 19 September long march are under way in Gazipur, Tangail, Sirajganj, Bogura, Gaibandha and Rangpur, according to the organisers.
The alliance’s seven demands include implementing the referendum verdict, holding those responsible for the July killings accountable, ending electricity, fuel, gas and fertiliser shortages, controlling the rising prices of essential commodities, improving the law and order situation, ending narrow partisan politics, and stopping corruption, extortion and land grabbing.
The alliance has urged students, workers, businesspeople, religious scholars and people from all sections of society to join the long march peacefully.
It also sought cooperation from the media, local administration, business community and transport workers to ensure the programme is conducted peacefully and in an orderly manner.
The organisers expressed hope that the long march would help bring their seven demands to the attention of the relevant authorities.
