The High Court has rejected a writ petition challenging the legality of the government decision banning the activities of the Bangladesh Awami League, ruling that the petition was not maintainable.
The order was passed on Sunday by a bench led by Justice JBM Hassan.
Lawyer Nurun Nabi Bulbul told reporters, “We argued before the court that the petitioner, Md Al Amin, is not a member of the Awami League. He has no right to file such a writ.”
On 7 September, Al Amin, a resident of Munshiganj, filed the petition, with Advocate Yunus Ali as counsel. The petition asked that the 12 May 2025 notification be suspended while the rule was under court review.
The notification, issued by the Public Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs, prohibited all activities of the Bangladesh Awami League and its affiliated, associate and fraternal organisations until the completion of trials against their leaders and activists at the International Crimes Tribunal.
It stated that until the tribunal proceedings are concluded, all forms of publications, media, online and social media campaigns, rallies, meetings, conferences and organisational activities by the Awami League and its affiliated bodies are banned.
Advocate Yunus Ali also appeared for the petitioner, while Deputy Attorney General Nur Mohammad Azmi represented the state.
