A college student died after drowning in the sea at Bashbaria Sea Beach in Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram on Friday evening.
The deceased, Md Meheraj Hossain, 19, was a resident of Purba Madarbari in Chattogram city and an HSC examinee of Chattogram MES College.
According to police and local sources, Meheraj went to the beach with his friend Md Sabbir.
He fell into the water around 5:30pm, and Sabbir jumped in to rescue him. Due to high tide and rough waves, both were swept away.
Locals rescued Sabbir alive using a boat, but Meheraj remained missing. About an hour later, his body was recovered and taken to Sitakunda Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.
Sitakunda Model Police Station Officer-in-charge Md Mohinul Islam, said Meheraj reportedly did not know how to swim. An unnatural death case has been filed.
