Christian Bale has given his reaction to the forthcoming reimagining of ‘American Psycho’, describing the project as a “bold choice”.
The actor, who famously portrayed Patrick Bateman in Mary Harron’s 2000 adaptation, shared his thoughts while speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at the New York premiere of his latest film, ‘The Bride’.
“Whoever wants to give it a shot, give it a go,” Bale said. “I loved making it with Mary Harron so many years back. So many fantastic memories. I don’t know if they’re doing a remake or what. I don’t know anything about it but all the best to them. I like brave people.”
A new version of the cult classic is reportedly in development from director Luca Guadagnino. While Austin Butler was initially linked to the role of Bateman when the project was announced in 2024, later reports suggested ‘The White Lotus’ actor Patrick Schwarzenegger was also being considered. As yet, no casting has been confirmed.
Author Bret Easton Ellis, whose 1991 novel inspired the original film, recently revealed on his podcast that several high-profile actors have turned down the role, possibly reluctant to step into Bale’s shoes. Ellis also claimed the upcoming adaptation will take a markedly different approach from the 2000 film.
The project is being penned by The Bourne Ultimatum screenwriter Scott Z. Burns.
While details remain scarce, the new take is expected to diverge significantly from Harron’s version, revisiting Ellis’s dark satire of ambition and excess from a fresh perspective.
