Five rebel candidates of the BNP failed to make an impact in five parliamentary constituencies in Sylhet division in the 13th parliamentary election, despite earlier speculation they could influence the outcome for the party’s official nominees.
Returning officers announced the results for the four districts of the division on Thursday night, confirming a landslide victory for the BNP, which secured 18 of the 19 seats.
The only exception was Sylhet-5 (Zakiganj-Kanaighat), where Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish candidate Mufti Abul Hasan won with 79,355 votes. The alliance’s main partner, Jamaat-e-Islami, did not secure any seat in the division.
In Sylhet-5, BNP rebel candidate Mamunur Rashid received 57,251 votes, finishing behind Mufti Abul Hasan and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam candidate Ubaidullah Faruk, who secured 69,774 votes.
In Sunamganj-3, BNP rebel candidate Barrister Anwar Hossain was the only rebel to emerge as the nearest rival to an official nominee. He secured 42,226 votes, while BNP nominee Mohammad Qaisar Ahmed won the seat with 97,313 votes. Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish candidate Mohammad Shahinur Pasha Chowdhury finished third.
In Moulvibazar-4 (Sreemangal and Kamalganj), BNP nominee Md Mujibur Rahman Chowdhury won with 170,877 votes. Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish candidate Sheikh Nure Alam Hamidi, contesting with the rickshaw symbol, secured 50,204 votes, while BNP rebel Md Mohsin Mia Madhu received 34,147 votes.
In Habiganj-1 (Nabiganj-Bahubal), BNP candidate Reza Kibria won unofficially with 111,999 votes. The 11-party alliance candidate Maulana Sirajul Islam, contesting with the rickshaw symbol, secured 56,132 votes, while BNP rebel Sheikh Sujat Mia received 24,637 votes.
The results underscore a consolidated performance by the BNP across Sylhet division, with rebel candidacies failing to alter the overall outcome.
