International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam said any letter, sent to the tribunal seeking cancellation of deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s death sentence, can be considered contempt of court.
Speaking to journalists at his office on Thursday, Aminul clarified that there is no legal provision for issuing such letters.
Describing the move as an attempt to mislead the media, he noted that while the prosecution has learned of the letter through media reports, they have not officially received any such correspondence.
Aminul suggested that these baseless efforts are intended to muddy the water at a time when the tribunal is conducting trials of highly influential individuals such as Hasina.
He further warned that if the law firm, or any associated individual or organisation, is found to have a presence in Bangladesh, legal action for contempt of court will be initiated against them.
According to the chief prosecutor, these actions are a motivated attempt to make the tribunal controversial.
“We are not taking these into account, and we are not concerned,” he said, adding that the tribunal judicial process will proceed at its normal pace and that the prosecution does not have the time to dwell on such matters.
It has been reported that Kingsley Napley, a United Kingdom-based legal services firm, sent an email to the tribunal on 30 March. In the letter, the firm reportedly termed the tribunal’s proceedings as illegal and contrary to justice.
However, the Prosecution office or the Tribunal’s registrar has yet to confirm receipt of the letter.
