The 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami has called for a protest rally on Saturday demanding the implementation of the referendum verdict.
The rally will be held after Asr prayers at the northern gate of Baitul Mukarram in the capital, the alliance announced on Thursday afternoon.
The announcement came a day after opposition leader and Jamaat Ameer Shafiqur Rahman threatened to take to the streets over the issue.
“We are very surprised, hurt, and dismayed by the government side’s actions regarding the referendum verdict,” Shafiqur Rahman said at a press conference at Parliament House on Wednesday evening.
“Insha’Allah, we will take to the streets with the people to demand implementation of the people’s verdict. And we will not stop until our demands are met,” he added.
The opposition leader’s remarks followed a walkout by the Jamaat-led opposition on the sixth day of the first session of parliament.
After discussing an adjournment motion, opposition members left the session at 5:45pm on Wednesday, alleging that the July Charter order had not been issued and that Shafiqur Rahman had been mis-coded.
Drawing the Speaker’s attention before the walkout, Shafiqur Rahman said, “I sought a remedy. This matter is not related to any particular party. Before the election, the government side and the opposition all agreed on this matter; we spoke in its favour, we campaigned.”
“We did not receive a remedy. As a result, not only us but the people’s verdict was also not reflected or valued. Sitting in the opposition, we cannot accept this devaluation. Therefore, in protest, we are walking out,” he said.
The speaker responded by noting that another adjournment motion would be considered later, suggesting the opposition might find answers there.
“Walking out is your right, but I want to say that another adjournment motion will be considered a little later today. I think you will get answers to your questions there,” the Speaker said.
He requested the opposition to wait and hear that motion before deciding to walk out.
Meanwhile, on Thursday afternoon at 3:30pm, Jamaat and its alliance members of parliament attended the adjourned session and took part in the day’s proceedings.
