Martin Odegaard continued his impressive start to the season by scoring the winner as Arsenal edged past Napoli in Naples to begin their Champions League campaign with a 1-0 victory.
The Arsenal captain struck from outside the box to settle a tight contest and send the travelling supporters into celebration. It was Odegaard’s fourth goal in five matches this season, including the Community Shield.
Arsenal had to work hard for the three points after failing to make the most of several clear opportunities. Mikel Arteta’s side created enough chances to take control but repeatedly missed the target.
Mikel Merino came closest early on when he was presented with a good opportunity midway through the first half. However, the Spain midfielder headed straight at Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret.
Bukayo Saka then lifted an effort over the crossbar when well placed, before Piero Hincapie missed another excellent chance from inside the six-yard box.
Napoli also threatened, with David Raya forced into an important moment when he spilled Kevin De Bruyne’s effort from distance. The Arsenal goalkeeper recovered quickly, but Ben White was needed to clear the danger before the hosts could capitalise.
Odegaard eventually provided the breakthrough with a composed finish from outside the area, giving Arsenal a deserved lead after their sustained pressure.
The result gives Arsenal an ideal start to their first Champions League campaign since last season’s painful final defeat.
Arteta’s side had won all eight of their group-phase matches on the way to last season’s final and have now opened this campaign with another important victory on the road.
Arsenal finished the match with 26 attempts on goal, their highest total in a Champions League game since the start of last season.
The final whistle brought visible relief for Hincapie, who dropped to his knees and celebrated by thumping the ground.
