BNP will finalise its candidate for the vacant Thakurgaon-1 (Sadar) parliamentary constituency by-election on 18 September.
Distribution of party nomination forms will commence on 15 September, followed by form submissions on 16 September. The final candidate selection will be decided at a meeting of the party’s nomination board on the evening of 18 September.
BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi made the disclosure on Saturday night following a meeting of the party’s Standing Committee at BNP Chairman’s office in Gulshan, Dhaka.
The meeting was presided over by BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
According to Rizvi, nomination seekers can collect application forms from the BNP Central Office in Naya Paltan on 15 September. The by-election for the Thakurgaon-1 seat is scheduled to be held on 29 October.
The parliamentary seat fell vacant after former BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir assumed the office of President. The Election Commission (EC) had announced the schedule for the by-election on 10 September.
In accordance with the schedule, the deadline for submitting nomination papers to the returning officer is 27 September, with scrutiny scheduled for 29 September. The last date for withdrawing candidature is 7 October, symbols will be allocated on 8 October, and voting will take place on 29 October.
The Standing Committee meeting also reviewed government activities, emphasising the implementation of dengue prevention initiatives undertaken by the prime minister.
Rizvi added that mosquito nets will be supplied to all hospitals at the district and upazila levels, alongside nationwide public awareness campaigns. The BNP will distribute awareness leaflets prepared by doctors and experts across the country, including Dhaka, and broadcast awareness programmes on social media, radio, and television.
The party will also coordinate with and supervise relevant stakeholders to ensure proper waste disposal at designated spots in schools, colleges, madrasas, and markets.
On organisational issues, the Standing Committee resolved to fill vacant committee positions caused by deaths, expulsions, or other reasons by promoting lower-tier leaders in accordance with constitutional provisions.
The meeting also discussed the effective execution of various activities and directives of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
This was the third Standing Committee meeting held by the BNP since forming the government following the 13th National Parliamentary Election. Newly inducted Standing Committee members Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Amanullah Aman, Professor Farhad Halim Donar, and Md Ismail Zabihullah attended the meeting for the first time.
