Opposition leader and Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has criticised the government for ignoring the severe hardships facing ordinary citizens, alleging that official statements project a false sense of normal operational reality while the country reels from compounding economic and energy troubles.
Speaking at a view-exchange meeting with local journalists at the Bogura Circuit House on Saturday morning, the Jamaat chief said Bangladesh is currently confronting a deep crisis driven by soaring commodity prices, power shortages, and a critical fertiliser shortage.
He emphasised that the ongoing energy crisis is inflicting severe damage on the country’s industrial sector.
Taking aim at the administration’s response, Shafiqur Rahman said that the government has failed to formulate or implement any alternative measures to resolve the crisis over the last six months.
He disclosed that the opposition had previously offered in parliament to form an expert-led team to assist the government in navigating the situation, but the proposal was rejected.
This refusal, he explained, left Jamaat-e-Islami and other opposition groups with no alternative but to announce public agitation programmes, including long marches.
The Jamaat leader further said that the government initially denied the existence of the power crisis altogether, arguing that alternative energy arrangements ought to have been secured within a strict timeframe.
He also charged the administration with betraying public trust by stepping back from its promised state reforms.
Addressing regional development, the Jamaat leader highlighted the longstanding neglect of Bogura despite its geographic significance and reputation as an educational hub.
He lamented that although Bogura was historically touted as a “mini industrial city,” its industrial and economic potential remains largely undeveloped even 55 years after independence.
