A Bangladeshi national was allegedly shot by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) while attempting to cut barbed wire inside Indian territory near the Shrinathpur border in Maheshpur, Jhenaidah.
The injured man has been identified as Rubel Hossain, 31, son of Mojibul Khan of Shyamkur Matpara village near the frontier.
The incident occurred early Tuesday.
Rubel, along with a group of others, entered India through the Shrinathpur BOP area at dawn for cattle smuggling.
Once inside, they tried to cut the barbed wire in the Mahendra area. At that time, a BSF patrol team from Mahendra camp opened fire with rubber bullets, leaving Rubel injured.
Major Towasin Habib Hasan, additional director of Jhenaidah BGB‑58 Battalion, said, “After the firing, Rubel and the others fled back into Bangladesh.”
He added, “We learned that Rubel was hit in the chest by a rubber bullet. He was first taken to Jibannagar Upazila Health Complex and later shifted to Dhaka for advanced treatment.”
