A Bangladeshi man, Shahidul Islam, 37, was shot dead by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) at the Goyeshpur border in Jibannagar upazila of Chuadanga on Saturday afternoon.
The incident took place around 4pm. Shahidul was the son of Loskor Ali of Goyeshpur village.
According to locals, Shahidul and five to six others described as drug traders crossed about 200 yards into India near main pillar No. 70 along the Goyeshpur border.
BSF personnel from the Meteria camp, who were patrolling the area, opened fire on them. Shahidul was killed on the spot, while the others managed to flee. BSF members reportedly took his body inside Indian territory.
Former chairman of Goyeshpur Union Parishad, Main Uddin Moyen, said he had heard about the incident but could not confirm the death.
Lieutenant Colonel Rafiq-ul Alam, commander of the Maheshpur-58 Battalion, said several traders had entered India to bring drugs when the shooting occurred. One of them was killed. He said they had received information that BSF personnel had taken the body into India.
