The Election Commission (EC) has suspended the National Identity Cards (NIDs) of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and nine of her family members following her removal from power during the popular uprising on August 5, officials at the National Identity Registration Wing confirmed.
Although the suspension was initially ordered on February 16, the information surfaced publicly on Monday (April 21).
According to officials at the NID Registration Wing, those whose NIDs have been suspended include Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, daughter Saima Wazed Putul, sister Sheikh Rehana, nephew Radwan Mujib Siddiq, nieces Tulip Siddiq and Azmina Siddiq, her former security adviser Major General (Retired) Tarique Ahmed Siddiq, his wife Shaheen Siddiq, and daughter Bushra Siddiq.
ASM Humayun Kabir, Director General of the National Identity Registration Wing, reportedly issued verbal instructions to suspend these NIDs. He is currently abroad and unavailable for immediate comment.
“Once locked, these NIDs cannot be used or updated. Typically, such actions are taken during ongoing investigations or upon requests from high-profile authorities,” explained Mohammad Ashraf Hossain, the System Manager at the registration wing.
Earlier on March 11, a court also froze 124 bank accounts belonging to Sheikh Hasina, her family, and associated institutions as part of ongoing investigations.
