The Hindu community in Bangladesh is celebrating Janmashtami on Friday, marking the birth of Lord Krishna with religious fervour.
According to Hindu belief, Lord Vishnu incarnated as Lord Krishna to protect Dharma (righteousness) from evil forces and restore order. Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudeva in Mathura on the eighth day of the bright fortnight, known as Shukla Pakkha, in the Bengali month of Bhadra during the Dwapara Yuga, reports UNB.
Various programmes are being held across the country. National dailies have published special articles, while Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television and private television and radio stations are airing special programmes on Lord Krishna’s life and teachings.
A three-day festival began on Thursday at Bandarban Rajarmath. Mahaprasad is being distributed every afternoon and night, alongside daily religious discussions. A colourful procession is scheduled for today. The festival will conclude on Saturday morning after the mahanam yajna, a town procession and an exchange of greetings.
