Ghana have reappointed Carlos Queiroz as head coach less than two months after the Portuguese appeared to leave the job following the Black Stars’ exit from the 2026 World Cup.
Queiroz took charge in April after the Ghana Football Association dismissed Otto Addo. He guided Ghana to the Round of 32 at the World Cup, where Colombia ended their campaign with a 1-0 victory in July.
After the defeat, the 73-year-old posted on social media that he was leaving his “brief journey” with Ghana with “pride”, appearing to bring his short spell to an end.
The GFA confirmed on Thursday that Queiroz will instead return for the September international window after discussions with the association and Ghana’s Ministry of Sports and Recreation.
“Queiroz’s previous mandate, which included leading Ghana at the just-concluded FIFA World Cup, concluded a few weeks ago. Following discussions with the GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, it was agreed that Carlos Queiroz would embark on a new coaching mandate, commencing with the upcoming international window,” the GFA said.
The association pointed to Queiroz’s international experience, technical expertise and knowledge of the Black Stars as the main reasons behind the decision.
His immediate task will involve the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. Ghana will face Ivory Coast on September 23 and Gambia on September 27 before playing Somalia twice in November, on the 11th and 15th.
Queiroz brings almost four decades of coaching experience to the role. He has managed Portugal, Iran, Colombia, Egypt, Qatar, Oman, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates at international level.
He also has significant World Cup experience. Queiroz coached Iran at the 2014, 2018 and 2022 tournaments and led Portugal at the 2010 World Cup, taking them to the Round of 16 before Spain eliminated them.
His club career has also taken him to Sporting CP, the New York/New Jersey Metrostars and Real Madrid.
Queiroz’s strongest club association came at Manchester United, where he worked as Alex Ferguson’s assistant during two spells between 2002 and 2003 and again from 2004 to 2008.
Ghana have now chosen experience over continuity after a World Cup campaign that ended earlier than they wanted. Queiroz gets another opportunity, but the pressure will quickly shift from explaining the past to delivering results in the next qualifying cycle.
